From Mateel e-mail:

For a variety of reasons, we are unable to stage Reggae on the River™ in 2021. Our intention is to host Reggae on the River with our world class talent lineup in Southern Humboldt County on our traditional dates next year, August 6-7, 2022. Please save the date and spread the word.

Reggae on the River™ has taken a hit over the past few years--first an economic collapse caused by cannabis regulation, the setback brought by an unsuccessful three year licensing deal with High Times, and now the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. But the Mateel Community Center is strong and Reggae on the River remains our cornerstone. We are working harder than ever to revitalize this critical community event and intend to be back in full effect on Reggae on the River's historic weekend in August 2022 at a to-be-announced location.

Mateel Community Center’s vision for Reggae on the River™ is as a world music and educational event that honors our community’s long history of family, tradition, music and farming. Our theme for 2022’s Reggae on the River™ will be “Honoring the Elders: Finding Ourselves,” a back-to-our roots vibe that honors the musical and cultural leaders who created and carried Reggae on the River™. We believe that Reggae on the River™ has a duty to continue telling our community’s story through the intersection of cannabis and music. You can expect more exciting announcements as we set our sights on August 6-7, 2022.

In that spirit, the Mateel is actively seeking proposals from interested community members to lead a panel or teach a short one or two day educational course at Reggae on the River™ in 2022 on any subject matter related to reggae, hip hop, world music, cannabis farming, cannabis appellations, regenerative or permaculture farming, or anything similar. Interested applicants should submit their CV and a short pitch of their proposed panel or course in 100 words or less to board @ mateel (dot) org.

The Reggae on the River™ event remains one of the world’s iconic events in Reggae music and in outdoor festivals. Three decades of festival goers have called “Reggae” (as it's known locally) “life changing.”

Please stay tuned for more news about the Mateel Community Center’s annual Reggae on the River™ event, to be held once again on August 6-7, 2022.

This festival has been rising from the ashes for several years now. I went to all the Reggae Risings, and I expect to be there again next year.
