Cornerstone, from Chico, California, found its roots in the DJ sound system. "Well, I start sparrin' with a sound (system) called Boom Shot International, and from there we perform to an ever growing number of people from around California," states Levi Jr., the band's frontsman. The sound system is run by DJ boomshot, who would later become Cornerstone's bass player.

Levi Jr. on vocals, was born and raised in the Montego Bay region of Jamaica where he was influenced early on by such perfomers as Brigadier Jerry, Nicodemus, Josey Wales, and Charlie Chaplin, among others. The drum and bass team is made up of Snale, aka Dale Prince, and Boomshot, aka Jay Langworthy. Dale started playing drums virtually from the time he was old enough to pick up two drum sticks. Funk, rock and fusion were his initial interests that in time, lead him to studying jazz, world beat, and reggae styles. Jay obtained his musical influences at an early age where he grew up in a family of jazz musicians. His first experience playing reggae was with the band Small Axe in Eugene, OR. Boomshot's solid, no-frills bas lines funish the warmth and heartbeat that is crucial to the reggae sound. Currently, L.P. aka Jason Spence is the one man rhythm section supplying both keyboards and guitars. John van Berkum on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Mike Newman on tenor sax.
