I was getting worried lately about reggae's fate, but I feel much better after reading this.

In other news, reggae was born when Bob Marley mixed rock and roll with ska. Bet you didn't know that. The guy is amazing. He is saving reggae and helping us to understand the history of Jamaican music at the same time.

at best the guy had one decent tune 4-5 years ago, and now just seems to pop up in the news every now and then despite not having anything of any quality. The novelty of his act wore off pretty quick and everyone realized the guy is a clown

sorry but you guys are haters. How has he either helped or hurt Reggae Music? Isn't he just a fan of reggae who like any musician uses his musical inspirations to make music of his own? Let me put it this way....no one would care less about this cat if he wasn't popular. He is popular and getting love from people who think he is a reggae musician when he is not. He has his own style of music which isn't really any "kind" of music. At this point he doesn't seem to be hurting anyone and you have no idea who he could have introduced to reggae music. Give the guy a break and let him do his thing. He doesn't smoke herb and a whole lot of people in here shouldn't be either. Some of us probably a little less:) The dude who wrote the article has more issues then the article feature.

His band and its approach are far too 'jam-bandish' to really get my respect inna reggae music...he's a barely passable toaster and an ok beatboxer, but oh my G_d, don't let him sing!
On the other hand...he doesn't glorify guns, punanny or bling, so how could he be a reggae artist?
perhaps one reason he gets a lot of haters is cos he doesn't deal with the accepted subject matter of dancehall reggae. I can sure do without his 'warning about the perils of getting high' however; it borders on the hypocritical and somewhat Christafari-an.

I have spoken with him much longer than that, and no, it didn't change my perspective. Just 'cuz he's a nice guy don't mean he should be singing...

On THAT note, I was AMAZED to see how many people came outta the woodworks a few years back in Long Beach to see him, and they were CLEARLY only there to see HIM (I still left in the middle of his set). So, like Ninja mentioned, it's great to see reggae reaching a new population of people BUT, his definition of "reggae music" is pretty loose as I would say. I still don't play him, and can't imagine ever doing so.

its just funny to me- somebody gets popular and people are HATING.. that is just kinda lame- it does not bring good karma... voice your opinion, say you dont like his singing.. but saying he's a clown doesn't really get you anywhere, and really just weakens your argument.
he is a nice guy, and he's doing a lot of positive things. people are so close minded when it comes to "reggae" - I know all you reggae purists may not like it if its not jamaican- but who is really doing things, as an original band outta JA for the "reggae" scene"?? rootz underground is the first thing that comes to mind..
sure you got dancehall hits and lots of singles that are getting attention around the world.. but "reggae" ina traditional sense, for me, is something of the past.. it is evolving.. and maybe it won't be "reggae" as in culture and the wailers.. and you dont have to like it.. BUT, people like matisyahu say that this kind of "reggae" is an inspiration to them- so wether you like it or not- at least he is giving props to this "genre"

I gave him an honest critique based on my love for and knowledge of reggae. He can chant & beatbox ok but he's cringingly out of tune when he tries to sing. His band's more of a jam band than a reggae band. I did give him props for not being a wagonist and promoting slackness and I fully realize that he inspires a lot of people, but found his slagging the herb questionable in light of his pre-conversion activities...don't find any of that to be 'hating', just honest opinion...
...oh, and if it matters, I'm jewish...

I gave him his chance(s) and his music did not keep my interest. I expressed my opinion and you are either welcomed to it or not, el abayarde. That is not "hating", just expressing a preference.

However, I did agree with Chimmy's "Culture Vulture" opinion and I think that fits Matis to a tee. Reason: the article leads me to believe that he is either ignorant of JA musical history or just ignores its importance:

"Reggae music, in a lot of ways, got really stagnant," he said. "You see a lot of the reggae bands play today and it's the same horn patches on keyboards that they've been playing for 15 years, and not in a retro-cool kind of way. It's totally nauseating to me.

"We're taking elements of reggae music, but totally crossing over into different genres and blending different things."

Indeed, he says that is how reggae developed in the first place, when Marley blended rock 'n' roll and ska. The concert video for "King Without a Crown" shows the extent of the new culture clash: There he is stalking the stage, the tassels of his tallit katan undershirt visible under his black jacket. His fedora comes off when he dives into the crowd but is quickly replaced by a yarmulke.

I don't really know anything about Matisyahu, but I have to point out that there's nothing hypocritical about someone who used to smoke pot saying that people shouldn't. It would only be hypocritical if he still did. People do grow and change and learn from the things that they do. If anything, the fact that he used to smoke makes his criticism more valid. It's the people who have never smoked and are trying to tell us how bad it is that I'd be wary of.

Personally, I think pot use is way over the top, at least around here in Mendocino County. I believe that marijuana is a blessing and its use is a sacrament that can give us true insights into ourselves and the world as well as bring messages from Jah or the forces of the universe. But in order for it to keep that value and meaning its use needs to be somewhat infrequent and it should be smoked or eaten with some reverence for what it can bring.

I find Matisyahu pretty much unlistenable , but he's got a point with that comment about Synth horn sounds. There are any number of current jamaican artists who can sing , write and perform miles better than Matisyahu, but their total lack of taste when it comes to the tones their bands use really lets them down. There is rarely much of an effort made to reproduce the sounds found on reggae records , but just the same crappy patches that haven't changed in years. Reggae is also perhaps the only genre where guitarists are still playing 80's style solos with no apparent irony.
I'm quite certain many music fans have come out to hear a reggae artist whose recordings they liked, been greeted with a blast of synth horns and hair-metal guitar, and turned around and left.

to my point. You might not like Matis or his music or both. To say that he can't hold a tune you must have somone to compare him with. If you take say the 20 "most known" artists in dancehall reggae today, how many do you think can "hold a tune"? Thus you have the "Auto" Tune. Just thank heavens that Matis has yet to discover the Autotune.

I jus listened to a bit of every track on this album 'Light' and quite honestly, I don't hear ANY reggae in there... oh, granted there is a little, very little bit of reggae influence in there but... geez this guy must have an enormous ego to think that this stuff can even be considered reggae, much less "save reggae music"... and G-D help the poor souls who get "to understand the history of Jamaican music at the same time" from this release...

Point taken sweaterfish. As Bob said, "herb is a plant." It seems too many wannabe rastas conveniently confuse worship of the deity with worship of the herb. I compared Matis to Christafari's Mark Mohr who also came from a hedonistic lifestyle with lots of drugs, and came out the other side to evangelist Christianity. But that might not be a fair comparison. I have a very rough time with Christafari due to his tendency to bite the Rastafarian hand that's fed him both musically and spiritually, and like Matis has long been critical of herb, but he also slags the remainder of the Rasta faith and livity. to the best of my knowledge Matisyahu isn't putting down Rastafari, nor is he constantly proselytizing for Judaism, such as Christafari's annoying attempts to convert people to Christianity.
My critique of Matis's music still stands however. The couple of times I've seen him live and he's attempted singing rather than chanting or beatboxing, he's been embarrassingly out of key. And no, I don't really have to compare him with any other vocalist, out of key is out of key. Maybe the autotune would help, but I despise it almost as much as off-key vocals. Most reggae vocalists (with a few notable exceptions) don't really need autotune, but it's the trendy thing in reggae right now, so plenty of artists who don't need it (M. Rose, Romain Virgo etc etc) still use it. Not sure if it would help Matis, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear him start using it.

Heard he listens to Midnite all lot of the time for inspiration which raises 2 questions. How could he say he is saving reggae when Midnite already did that 10 years ago and how could he be so into Midnite when they are by far the biggest proponents of the sacrament to ever grace the Kings music.

In di begining his music was more reggae not roots but this new stuff he's come up with is horrible for real reggae music he completely went astray as far as his music used to be. In the begining it was cool he was bringing new people to reggae and roots reggae music, but now he's giving a bad name to all those who listen to his stuff and to his present fam base, dis is no bueno fi good roots music. He needs to stop and tell everyone he's no reggae musician he's a babylonian musician but with good messgae?

echo I agree 110% with you about the synth horns, but as I'm sure you know, reggae-nomics dictate more often that not that bands can't afford to travel with a horn section. It's true that nothing beats a live horn section, but better patches are available these days; oftentimes, producers and the musicians themselves are too lazy to find them & use them, however. That being said, Matisyahu is guilty of much the same sort of musical skimping. The few times I've seen him he's had a 3-pc. without even a keyboardist. No piano skank, no bubble organ. No wonder his band sounded much more like a jamband than a reggae band. If that's all he feels he needs, so be it, but don't expect it to have much of a resemblance to roots reggae.
And ever since the late 70s reggae artists from JA have been coming to the US with some screamy psychedelic blues guitarist in tow, because they've been told that's what the yankees want to hear. Hell, that's an unfortunate tradition that goes back as far as Tosh & Donald Kinsey. The problem is, the American bands who grew up with that kind of guitar in the live shows they saw think that's what constitutes live reggae lead guitar and so are still perpetuating what they heard. That may be why much reggae solo guitar is still stuck in the metal 80s as you pointed out. Personally I'd much rather check Dwight Pinkney, Chinna Smith (when he's not indulging in Jerry-ish noodling), Mikey Chung, Bo Pee etc. for the sparse, clean, rhythmic lead playing that cuts so nicely in & out of the reggae bass & drums. That's missing in so much reggae today, and I don't hear it in Matisyahu's music either.

I am not sure what all the problem is here guys.

I saw him once, and he was interesting for about 15 minutes.

As far as his recorded music, he never gets played on any reggae shows I hear around Norcal, he never gets dropped into any of the podcasts that I subscribe to, and his occasional live show around here pull such a young crowd that it's like going to a school dance.

His music is so easy to avoid, why worry about it?

Maybe he is and maybe he isn't. Like I said, I'd want to meet him and talk to him before I'd condemn him to death or life in a cage. That's the kind of talk a lot of rapists and pedophiles use. The overwhelming fact is, HE's the adult, and HE could have been in a position to say no any time. I know that many teenage girls can be agressive, but an adult can still say no any time. I ride the bus a lot in Kingston, which needless to say attracts a lot of attention from high school girls in certain neighborhoods I go though, as white skin and a foreign accent in this country usually means money. As pushy as they can be though, I know that I am the adult and obligated to say no, not to mention I have no interest in 14-15 year old. a 15 year old girl is not the preditor in a situation with an adult, especially one that significantly older...

There's no, i repeat, no justification for letting this guy off the hook for this -- statutory rape is the charge, I believe. Look, the guy is 38 and she is 15 -- he is 23 years older than she, for crying out loud.
