Yes indeed.

This year, it's looking like just about everyone is bringing their own band....

Thank you, thank you, thank you Daniel.

Such great news. Amazing. Really, I could give props for the next several hours. I'm impressed. Thank you.

I haven't seen king yellowman since '91 and he defined that year for me. I was only 19 and I listened to yolks constantly. Big up to the SNWMF crew for this draw. His set is going to bring back a lot of memories of the late 89's and early 90's.

! YES !

Nice! have not seen him since he performed with Lucky Dube at House of Blues in LA circa 1995 ish.....give thanks!
Re: SNWMF 2015 Presents: Yellowman

Yeah, thinking the last time we saw him was 2000/2001-ish. He did a lot of the Renegade Production festivals, and made his way to the Bay Area clubs. Always a high energy show that left your legs weak and quivering.

If I didn't mention it before - REALLY JAZZED !!!
Re: SNWMF 2015 Presents: Yellowman

First saw Yellowman in 1987 when I was living in NYC.
Saw him again at either Sunsplash or Sumfest in JA but can't remember which year.
Saw him for the last time in Guam 4 or 5 years ago.

HIgh energy shows all...and I look forward to seeing him once again at SNWMF.

THANKS

So I appreciate these reviews of his live shows, especially Jahson's. However I have to ask about his stroke and how it affects his live show?
Re: SNWMF 2015 Presents: Yellowman
April 02, 2015 09:22PM
I'm not aware of his ever having had a stroke. He was diagnosed with skin cancer in the early 80s and was told he only had 3 years to live. Thereafter, in the mid-90s he had cancer of the jaw for which he was treated, leaving him looking even less attractive then before (in spite of his saying 'they call me mr. sexy').

Here's a video from a few years ago.

He kills it during live shows. High knees...lots of energy. He played at Reggae in the Hills two years ago and it was fire!!!

Thank you all! I love long yellow but as I mentioned j haven't seen him in almost 25 years. His performance is now top 5 anticipated great performances of this year and I can't wait to see him soon come.

He's been here in Portland twice in the last 10 years and I enjoyed both shows. A worthy addition, especially as he has never played SNWMF before.

Awesome!!!! I was seriously thinking the other day that it would be nice to see Yellowman at SNWMF. I catch him everytime he is in the area, always a fun and high energy show. NOBODY brings it like King Yellowman
Re: SNWMF 2015 Presents: Yellowman

is his act cleaner as he gets older or does he still include some of his raunchy earlier work?
Re: SNWMF 2015 Presents: Yellowman
April 03, 2015 02:56PM
I was wondering the same thing akee123. The first time I saw him was at a concert at Damali Beach in Ja in 1986. It was the first time I heard a jamaican do an anti gay rap.......... The words coming from his mouth were very disgusting!!! And then he went on to do the rauchy. It's been hard for me to enjoy him but I am looking forward to see what he does at SNWMF......... It's been awhile......
Re: SNWMF 2015 Presents: Yellowman
April 03, 2015 06:39PM
Well he did do one song about putting on a condom at the Unity fest, might not be what you want young ears to hear, but if he had gone into any anti gay raps i woulda left.

Love that reggae!
Re: SNWMF 2015 Presents: Yellowman

He had cleaned up his act quite a bit the last two times I saw him here in Portland. At one point in the earlier show he even said something to the effect that freedom of speech does not mean that you should be saying bad things about people. I think his close brushes with death have changed him for the better.
Re: SNWMF 2015 Presents: Yellowman
April 04, 2015 06:20AM
just to be clear though: but don't expect a clean show. Don't hope for one. Part of what makes his show dope is the dynamic bounces from Blueberry Hill innocence and feel-good fun to some raunch to some classic Dancehall killer thing. It captivates me. Superdope performer that many of the younger kids at the fest may have never seen.
Big co-sign on this one. Obviously main-stage correct?

It'll be a great show. He has great tunes.

Love that reggae!

King Yellow to the Main Stage
Re: SNWMF 2015 Presents: Yellowman
April 05, 2015 04:40PM
Pretty certain he'll say something antigay and something raunchy. If that's a criterion at a reggae show you're lost, in denial or you just don't understand patois. Anyways if you concentrate on that aspect then you're missing the point. Just because you see a show does not mean that you have to cosign 110% of what's being said, that's PURE FANTASY!! There are sacred things in life and there are menial things, that's what makes us human. If you want artists that are politically correct in a western or California sense then I would say yard reggae is the wrong tree to bark up.
Re: SNWMF 2015 Presents: Yellowman

Focus on the fact that Yellow will be at SNWMF providing more energy than most other artist on either stage, being older than most, and surviving Cancer longer than anybody thought he could. Yellow has more hits than some artist have tunes. We had him thru Mendo last year and was impressed at his energy and stage presence for a smaller show-not holding back for a smaller venue, always good to see somebody that has that much love for the craft thru the years to still bust a dance

Winston Foster : saw him for the 1st time on the Sunplash Tour 1988? at Main St. Live in Dallas....with Toots & The Maytals, Pato Banton, Sophia George, Edi Fitzroy, The Bloodfire Posse, and Sagittarius Band. Caught him again in Dallas circa 1992 on a rainy night at an all Jamaican club....nice get for the history of Sierra Nevada!

But I say... Some Never Even Plant yet want to Reap,
If you run, be careful, try to look before you leap;
Took a little walk from my Vineyard...
Now I'm on my own
Now I'm left alone..

Yes-I ! I'm going to this fest JUST to see him. Never get tired seeing him. Thinking of his opening "Sea Cruise" every time. If he can't get you moving, who can? Beyond legendary.

Papaken, that's an awesome lineup.

Once again, big props to Sierra! My buddy is flying in from Hawaii for SNWMF, was on the fence until he found out King Yellow was announced.

I watched him RULE JAMAICA in the early 80s, on the air and in the dance---live sets would see Winston take on all comers from the Rub A Dub era DJs, and none could budge him.

I have the absolute highest respect for this reggae survivor and singular instrument for positive social change in his homeland.

Saw him in '89 and his lyrics were VERY misogynistic. "I take me big cock and throw it in da pussy" is one line that stood out. He kept going on and on. I was with a group of girls and we were all in our late teens...it made things very uncomfortable and we eventually worked our way out of the crowd as some of the girls were very offended. It was lame because Ras Midas had played right before him and the mood was nice. Then came YM...I'll pass.

Yeah, he could be pretty gross back then. I left early from quite a few shows where he was on the bill back in the 80's when I called LA home. But that was over 25 years ago and he has cleaned up his act quite a bit since then.

I understand Jcom. I first saw YM at Demali Beach Ja in 1986. I was camping there and there was this big reggae concert. I never had heard an anti gay rant until Yellow Man. It was so disgusting I went back to my camp. I saw him a few more times at the Berkeley Greek and was not impressed. So after many years now I'm really looking forward to his set and see all the changes everyone is talking about. We all evolve and grow and hopefully he has.
