Sierra Nevada World Music Festival 1997

Amandala Poets

Truly in keeping with the World Music spirit, an obvious inclusion to the Festival would be the Amandla Poets. Here, reggae music's cry for emancipation is never more needed and valued than in South Africa. The Amandla Poets combine reggae with Mbaqanga, township music rhythms made popular by the likes of Hugh Masakela. They have injected their own brand of multi-national funkiness, and their 14-member line-up includes dense layers of percussion, a full horn section, rapping and singing. They will, in their own words, "provoke your head as well as your feet."
